Each Monday night city business is taken care of at the Huron City Commission meeting. Sometimes there is an opportunity to get a little education. That was the case this past Monday night with a mosquito control coverage from Huron Parks and recreation director Chad Schroder. Chad pointed out some of the things that are monitored on a continual basis to determine when to spray.
Chad said major factors that impact spraying include the weather.
Chad emphasized residents should be on alert to control mosquitos in their backyard as the spray will not cover much past the initial area. He said the forecast of rain is also a determining factor.
West nile virus is a major concern for mosquito control with the culex tarsalis. In a trapping this past week at one location 780 regular mosquitos and 5 culex tarsalis. In another trap 22,550 mosquitos and 21 culex tarsalis. Those were shipped to the state laboratory in Pierre and results posted on the SD state health website.
