Absentee voting for the June 2nd primary election is supposed to start today. The problem is that the ballots are not ready. County auditors have been scrambling for weeks to avoid the problem because of a lack of time to make sure candidates were certified to be on the ballot. Thursday Minnehaha county auditor Leah Anderson said if the ballots arrived that day her crew would be working into the evening to get things ready by the morning.
Alyssa Lange with the Yankton county auditors office says the delay was caused by a short time frame from when the petitions were due and the absentee start date.
In Hughes county finance officer Thomas Oliva said he and his colleagues just have to deal with the situation.
In Beadle county more of the same story as we hear from Jill Hanson, county auditor who recommends calling ahead before going to vote at the auditors office.
If you need to register for the first time voting or change your registration the deadline is May 18. Primary election day is June 2nd.
