James Perkins a Union veteran of the Civil War who was the last Civil War veteran to be buried in Kingsbury county will receive a special marker at his gravesite Tuesday October 6th at the Lake Preston Cemetery. Kingsbury County and city governments have proclaimed it James K Preston Day. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the independence of the nation. Representative of the Sons or Union Veterans of the Civil War, Cliff Hadley of Huron said the memorial of the James K Perkins gravesite fits well with that recognition.
Following the Union’s victory in the Civil Way those soldier’s headed back to where they came from or ventured in a new direction like South Dakota as did James Perkins.
James Perkins lived for a 75th year reunion of civil war soldiers that was held in Gettysburg Pennsylvania in 1938. The Lake Preston cemetery ceremony is open to the public. Cliff said there will be a short program.
The commemoration event is at the Lake Preston cemetery on Tuesday October 6th at 10 am. Events in Yankton, Lincoln Clay and Union Counties will take place at the same time.
