Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden and Democratic challenger Dan Ahlers debated this weekend at the South Dakota State Fair.
Both candidates criticized President Trump’s decision to import more foreign beef.
Rhoden said he was disappointed.
Ahlers said Trump is ignoring American producers.
When it comes to education funding, Ahlers said the state isn’t keeping its promises.
Rhoden said South Dakota schools are properly funded.
Both were asked about Amendment I — a proposal to repeal Medicaid expansion if federal funding for it drops below 90 percent.
Ahlers said Medicaid is worth fighting for.
Rhoden said the amendment will not end Medicaid expansion.
Ahlers said this is part of a pattern of lawmakers ignoring voters.
Rhoden took issue with that comment.
The weekend debate was hosted by the South Dakota Farmers Union. Election day is November 3. Early voting starts September 18.
