Huron Tiger Blake Ellwein was announced South Dakota Mr Basketball last night at the Huron High School Athletic Awards program. Blake was a five year varsity player, four year starter, three time first team AA all state, and of course helped the Tigers to the AA championship in March. Blake said nobody is in it for awards, but it’s nice to be noticed.
Blake gave complete credit to his coaches and especially his teammates.
Blake is Huron’s boys basketball all time leading scorer at 1535 career points, a record previously held by his dad Jay, who Blake passed in February in Sturgis. Blake holds the record despite missing a month due to injury his freshman year, and two more games this past season due to illness. Blake joins Rod Merriam 1980 and Eric Hall 2004 at Mr Basketball winners from Huron, and Amy Burnett, who was Miss Basketball in 1990, Blake will be playing at SDSU this fall. Also, Blake’s mom, Raven Morgan Ellwein, found out Wednesday that she will be inducted into the Mitchell High School Hall of Fame later this year.
