The names of two Pierre residents killed in a crash last week in Mitchell on Interstate 90 have been released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The Department of Public Safety says 34 year-old Shane Willis and 38 year-old Melynda Willis were killed in the crash. A one-year-old female and three year-old male, also from Pierre suffered minor injuries. All four occupants were using seat belts at the time of the crash. The crash happened last Wednesday afternoon around 5:12 pm near Interstate 90 mile marker 331. The preliminary investigation into the crash indicates a 2018 Dodge Ram was traveling east on the interstate between the two I-90 Exits in Mitchell. The Dodge entered the south ditch and hit a guard cable near the Rowley Street bridge. The Dodge fell down to Rowley Street where it struck a retaining wall, coming to rest on its side. Willis and his family moved to Pierre in April of 2025 where Shane Willis was manager of a new Les Schwab Tire store.
A public celebration of life for the Willis’ will be held Tuesday, May 5th at six pm at the Steamboat Park Picnic Pavilion.
