Representatives from each branch of South Dakota’s state government told an in-person and televised audience last Thursday September 18th how they keep each other in check.
The “Separation of Powers Town Hall” was held at the Capitol rotunda in Pierre.
It included Gov. Larry Rhoden and Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen; Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven Jensen and Justice Patricia DeVaney; Republican Rep. Scott Odenbach of Spearfish, Republican Sen. Carl Perry of Aberdeen, Democratic Rep. Erik Muckey of Sioux Falls and Democratic Sen. Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls.
The 90-minute program can be viewed on the YouTube channel of SDPB, which produced the program with South Dakota News Watch.
SDPB’s Jackie Hendry and News Watch’s Kevin Killough moderated.
The two organizations are building on an effort started last year with a series of town halls, discussions and community gatherings intended to increase civic engagement and media literacy.
The League of Women Voters of South Dakota and Chiesman Center for Democracy at the University of South Dakota have also signed on as partners.
