When school started this fall, student cell phones were banned in Brookings High School. Each student received a magnetic pouch in which they lock up their phones throughout the day.
Roughly a month later, superintendent Summer Schultz told the Brookings School Board the rollout has gone smoother than expected.
Brookings had forbidden in-class phone use in the past; but this year, students were required to prove they have their phones locked in the pouches at the start of each day.
Schultz said the response at Brookings High School has been surprisingly positive.
In August, the school board voted to make all schools in Brookings “device-free” during the school day. So far, the high school is the only building implementing the Yondr pouches. The Yondr pouch program cost the district approximately $40,000. Currently, about one-third of school districts in South Dakota require that students either remove or lock up their phones during the school day.
