This Friday March 27th will mark four weeks since a large wind accelerated brush fire threatened South Huron. Early in the day on February 27th winds were from the SW at up to 15 mph, later in the morning winds shifted coming out of the NW at up to 30 with gusts of 40 mph. At 1156 am the first call came into Huron 911 about a grass fire in the southern part of Huron. The Huron Fire department was paged to the fire that was quickly spreading through Stony Run creek in sw Huron. Information posted from the Huron Fire department following the incident described it as a large grass fire that was wind driven with the very dry conditions in the area. The fire ran along Stony run creek located west of Runnings in Huron. The Huron fire department report listed at least 30 structures that were in the path of the blaze. Additionally livestock from a cattle operation were in the line of fire. The full Huron fire department with added resources from Wolsey, Cavour and Alpena responded to the blaze.
The starting point of the fire was determined to be at an area along stony run creek east of the end of Parkside drive in SW Huron. Parkside drive runs along the north side of the Gibbs Park addition that was purchased by the city in 2025 for future park development. Through two confidential sources Huron Radio news has confirmed that a meeting was held at city hall that evening after the fire was extinguished. Officials confirmed that a city employee was working alone at Gibbs Park near Stony Run creek on a future walking trail bridge to be in place at the park. They stated the worker accidentally sparked the fire while cutting metal on the planned bridge.
While the cause of the blaze was not intentional the accidental ignition of the grasses with strong winds quickly spread the flames. Not lost in this follow up is the work of everyone involved between the fire crews, community members and property owners all working together to prevent property loss.
