A bill was heard in the House Education Committee in Pierre on Wednesday that would address disruptive students in the classroom. HB1017 would permit the board of a school district to require certain students to receive instruction in alternative settings. The bill brought to address a wave of aggressive and disruptive behavior in the lower grade levels. Governor Larry Rhoden’s Chief of Staff Mackenzie Decker spoke of the measure.
Retired school psychologist Florence Thompson Fuller voiced her support for the measure.
No opponent testimony was given. Secretary of Education Joe Graves was asked what happens to old records of students who were disciplined.
The measure passed on a 15-0 vote.
