The legislature’s House Education Committee voted unanimously Friday, Jan. 16 to defer debate on a bill to give schools the power to assign alternative educational settings to students displaying violently disruptive behavior.
State Education Secretary Joseph Graves proposed House Bill 1017. He said it’s not a perfect solution.
Rob Monson is executive director for the School Administrators of South Dakota. His group opposes the bill.
District 7 State Rep. Roger DeGroot, R-Brookings said he wants more details.
DeGroot said he’s in favor of the bill — just not in its current form.
The committee voted 15-0 to defer discussion of the bill for two to three weeks.
