Interstate 29 part of what connects several states in the central part of the United States is an integral section of the transportation system. It also offers easy access to businesses in cities along the stretch for nefarious and fraudulent activities.
On October 29th information was brought to the attention of the Watertown and Brookings Police Departments about a series of theft’s that occurred October 28th and 29th at Walmart stores in Sioux City Iowa, South Sioux City Nebraska, Sioux Falls and Brookings South Dakota. Law enforcement received information about subjects fleeing from a jurisdiction south of Codington County that were involved in a credit card scam. Their vehicle had been identified and an ATL was put out for area law enforcement to find the vehicle.
Codington County deputies along with the South Dakota Highway Patrol were able to locate the vehicle, a traffic stop was conducted and two occupants were detained. The information was provided by the Codington County States Attorney’s office and said that the report from the Brookings PD stated the subjects were reported to be committing fraud at Walmart in Brookings. The individuals were positively identified as the two subjects that were in the stopped vehicle.
In a search of the vehicle next to the passenger seat there were a series of credit cards and identity documents in plain view, two cell phones were located in the center console between the driver and passenger seat. A computer case in plain view was in the back seat and subsequent search of the vehicle yielded over 300 credit cards, 11 credit card skimmers all numbered one through twelve with number four still unaccounted for. A credit card reader and writer along with a number of homemade USB magnetic strips for reading credit card numbers were also located.
The two subjects taken into custody and being charged in Codington County are Cuban nationals with current green cards and living in Florida. They both face 66 charges of forgery with all of the credit cards and forgery equipment taken as evidence in the case. One of the accused Yordany Cuervo was bonded out this past Monday for $25,000 as of today the second accused Dario Brito Permuy has not bonded out. The Codington County States attorney is prosecuting the case. Both defendants pled not guilty to the charges and a jury trial has been tentatively set for February 12th.
Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
