On September 17th it was announced that Fair City foods would be closing one month late on October 15. The building that housed Fair City foods was sold to an out of state interest and did not wish to retain the lease to a grocery business. The name of the purchaser has not been released. That location on the north end of Huron has been a mainstay for a grocery business since the late 1960’s. We spoke with a former co-owner of Fair City foods and one time employee at Haley’s Food Store in the 1970’s. Gene Clement was asked about the property location on the north end of Huron once known as Super City.
Gene said following the Tempo fire the building was rebuilt and a grocery business was there for well over 50 years.
With Haley’s food doing business in the early 1970’s, an established department store business was right next door. A similar set up was in place on the south end of Huron. Clement said after several years in business Bill Haley would sell the business to an out of state buyer.
Following the Holiday foods ownership another out of state owner purchased and improved the store.
Gene Clement said after he and Jay Mutchelknaus purchased the store it was once again locally owned. He said that was one of its many great features.
Gene gives an update on the sale of the building but it is the same as we knew two weeks ago.
