South Dakota has its first officially announced candidate for governor in 2026.
State Representative Jon Hansen of Dell Rapids made his announcement last night before supporters at an event in Sioux Falls.
Hansen’s announcement doesn’t move the needle for Governor Larry Rhoden on when–or if–he’ll make his own announcement on whether he’s running next year.
It’s likely that South Dakota voters will see a Republican Primary race for governor next year.
Other being mentioned as possible candidates include Congressman Dusty Johnson, Attorney General Marty Jackley and Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden.
